Arlo Maverick is an Edmonton-based hip-hop MC whose sound explores Jazz, Reggae, and Soul yet identifies itself as hip-hop. Influenced by his uncle’s multi-genre record collection which ranged from country western, funk, gospel to soul, Maverick’s sound is a reflection of his diverse and rich musical upbringing.
Originally MCing under the handle of PA Brando, Maverick later adopted the moniker of Arlo Maverick to represent his non-conformist approach and his ideological independence in music. Placing much emphasis on lyrics and storytelling Maverick dares to be different in a hip-hop age of strip club anthems, dramatized gunplay street bangers or overtly sugary pop rap songs.
What sets Arlo Maverick apart from his peers is the sincerity of his words and emotions. While some rappers offer trite breakup lyrics to seem vulnerable, Maverick speaks to the genuine emotion of betrayal and loss.
But Arlo Maverick’s musical content is not all about his relationship with women he both admires and desires. With songs that deal with the struggles of paying rent after being laid off or the rising cost of living Maverick’s lyrics speak for the working class. Raised in a single parent home Maverick knows firsthand the challenges of single mothers and tries to give those stories a voice when he rhymes.
In his hometown of Edmonton, Alberta Arlo Maverick is known as a renaissance man. Not only is Maverick one fourth of one of Edmonton’s most successful and respected hip-hop acts – Politic Live – he is also a campus radio DJ, journalist, community activist, youth mentor, spoken word poet, entrepreneur, actor and photographer. With a great appreciation for arts as a whole Maverick finds it very difficult to limit himself to just penning songs.
Though a member of Politic Live, Arlo Maverick has also made a name for himself through his ongoing collaborations with acts like 2010 ECMA Nominee Shiest, 2009 Juno Nominated reggae band Souljah Fyah and his own off-shoot super group Mahogany Public which received a Western Canadian Music Award Nomination for their debut album JALI Volume 1.
